Before you had kids, you probably watched children publicly tantrum with confusion and curiosity. What’s going on and why doesn’t that parent just do something about it? Until the day comes when it’s your child, it’s impossible to understand the complexity of this scenario. You feel both frustrated with and sad for your kid. You think others are judging you as a bad parent. Through it all, the tantrum continues. Or is this a meltdown?Managing Childhood Tantrums: Strategies for Parents Dr Rick Pomfret Therapy for Men San Francisco Marin County Online Therapy4Men.com

Yes, they are two different events (and we’ll get to that soon). But either way, how you respond is key. It is precisely how your children learn about emotional regulation.

Tantrum or Meltdown?

When a child is kicking and screaming in a supermarket, it’s not the time to ponder semantics. However, knowing the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum is a major part of resolving the situation.

Tantrums

Generally speaking, a child may tantrum as a method of getting their way. In other words, they have some control over their behavior and may modulate their actions based on the reaction they provoke. If they get what they want, they’ll stop. But the more productive option is to develop healthier methods for easing them back to a calmer state of mind (see below for about that).

Meltdowns

Children lack the cognitive and language skills to express the full range of their emotions. They’re easily overwhelmed and thus, when triggered, they don’t put on a performance (like a tantrum). Rather, they are at the mercy of their stress reactions and can rapidly slide into a full-blown meltdown.

Tantrum or Meltdown: Why Your Reaction Is Important

Children who have the greater risk of anxiety disorders are those who learn that expressing their feelings is viewed as negative. This only increases the odds of tantrums — even into adulthood. How you respond to your child’s tantrums and meltdowns teaches them how to regulate emotions — so be a good role model.

Also, before a tantrum or meltdown can possibly begin, you must learn about your child’s triggers. It’s a lot easier to prevent tantrums than to resolve them. So, when your kid deals with adversity without melting down, praise them. Encourage them to make such choices as often as they can.

Navigating Meltdowns at the Grocery Store and Beyond

As you peruse the suggestions below, please never forget that your child needs to have meltdowns. It’s a form of communication for someone that young. Also, all that crying and screaming is the only way such a young person can release the stress hormones that are coursing through their bodies. Therefore, they need and deserve all the compassion you can muster, for example:

Don’t Confuse Your Emotions With Theirs

All throughout your life, you will encounter people with feelings you do not understand or agree with. Such a difference of perspective is not something to take personally. In other words, a child’s tantrum or meltdown is not helped when you take it personally. They’re stuck and don’t know what else to do. Ideally, you can lead by example by staying calm.

Keep Calm and Them Safe

Stay present and let your child know you recognize their discomfort. Resist the temptation to ask them to suppress their emotions. Tantrums and meltdowns are part of a phase based on their age. Supporting them during such a confusing experience is a powerful way to build a stronger connection. If it’s a meltdown, sometimes the best thing you can do is wait it out. It will run its course when your child runs out of energy.

Through it all, do your best to take care of yourself. If your child’s tantrums feel like more than you can handle, I invite you to reach out for help.
